Church Information Form

Brief Church Mission Statement:

In response to God’s call, it is the mission of the First Presbyterian Church of Monrovia to glorify God by worshipping the Father in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24); by proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ in the church, the community, and throughout the world (Matthew 28:18-20); by nurturing believers and equipping the members for the work of the ministry (Ephesians 4:11-13); by seeking to exemplify God’s love in all that we do (Ephesians 3:17-19); by ministering to those in need (Matthew 25:35-36, 1 John 3:16-18); and by providing Christian fellowship (1 John 1-3); all under the direction of the Holy Spirit, according to Christ’s example, in a spirit of love.

Brief description of our church/organization programs or accomplishments:

The First Presbyterian Church of Monrovia, known as FPCM, is an ECO Church – a Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians. The original Church was established in 1888. Today we are in the heart of our community where we maintain a large facility where the Love of God and Jesus Christ are central. An outstanding Worship Team leads our weekly service which is often enhanced with an excellent choir, bell choir, and organ and brass ensemble that send our spirits soaring!

The church offers Christian Education programs for preschool age through high school on Sundays, particularly, and midweek as needed. The Church also provides a weekday nursery school which serves church families and the community at large.

Prayer is a major emphasis throughout the organized groups: with Session elders as they consider membership and campus needs, with the Ministry Team as they prepare the weekly Order of Service, with Bible Study Leaders as they listen for the Holy Spirit’s insights on scripture, and with intercessors and deacons who pray for families under their care. In addition to many other service-related activities often described as “Compassionate Care”, our deacons visit and deliver flowers to shut-ins and those in the hospital or in need of a special touch.

There are many Bible studies offered such as Heart to Heart, Women’s Circles, Wednesday morning Women’s Study, Wednesday afternoon study, and Thursday afternoon study along with Bible Study prior to our Sunday Service. We also offer “Help for Hurting Parents”. All these offer opportunities to meet regularly, study, discuss, and encourage one another in Faith.

The church has supported many local outreach programs through the years. One program that the Church has supported generously is “Family Promise” which provides temporary housing for homeless families, and helps them find employment and permanent housing. At the start of the program we actually housed and fed up to three families for a week at a time on the church property. Other outreach includes Door of Hope, the Foothill Pregnancy Center, and the Unity Center. The Church also manages its own outreach programs. One is our “Baskets of Blessings” program which provides 30 to 45 needy families with food baskets at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. Another is “Prayer Shawl Ministry” in which beautiful hand-crocheted shawls are provided to those in physical or spiritual need.

During the challenge of COVID-19, we kept Jesus’ love in our hearts with Zoom meetings, email, texting, more phone calls than usual, and ‘virtual’ services in whatever combination worked for each of us. We kept ‘meeting’ online or, increasingly, on our patio for Services in which the Word of the Lord was spoken and praised. On Palm Sunday, to everyone’s delight, we moved back into our sanctuary for Services - attracting many new and previous attenders from the surrounding community.

Gifts, skills, and experiences our congregation possesses to fulfill its mission:

Our congregation is gifted in that we have a large segment of prayerful, generous members. Numerous members are devoted to Bible study and intercessory prayer. Whenever there is interest expressed in a new Bible study, it is usually quickly populated. Whenever financial assistance is needed, there is often an immediate and generous outpouring of funds. Willingness to support the Church financially received one of the higher responses in a survey that was part of our Mission Study. This is a caring church.

Key theological issues of our church and society that are reflected in the ministry of our congregation/organization:

There are a number of theological issues and perspectives that are gaining in popularity today. Some of these issues address ways of coming to the Father other than through Jesus Christ and the importance of your conscience as an equal partner with scripture when determining your social actions (as opposed to scripture being the sole authority). While impossible to speak for everyone in the church, members of First Presbyterian Church of Monrovia are generally opposed to some of these issues, and, indeed, these issues played a critical part in the decision to leave Presbyterian Church U.S.A. in favor of ECO. First Presbyterian Church of Monrovia is strongly committed to reform theology and sees scripture as infallible and the authority of God.
