Music Minister Overview:


The Music Minister shall be a strong leader possessing a passion for traditional worship with a love for choral music and hymns in traditional and varied styles, a vision for musical excellence, the ability to lead vocalists and instrumentalists, performance skills on piano and organ, and the ability to lead congregational singing.  Through our worship, God will be praised and glorified, people will be connected with each other and the un-churched and non-believers will hear the proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ.


 


Position Type: Part-Time (Avg. 20hrs per week) / Contract
Salary: Negotiable, based on experience


Music Minister Qualifications:


Candidate must have:



  1. A personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, strive to grow personally and professionally in that relationship and view music as a ministry of spiritual growth, development and outreach.

  2. An understanding of the Lutheran theology of worship.

  3. Demonstrated experience in selecting music, extensive knowledge of hymnody and technical proficiency in performing organ and piano music.

  4. Demonstrated experience leading congregational singing, choirs, small groups, soloists, hand bells and other instrumental ensembles.

  5. Strong communication skills, written and verbal

  6. Demonstrated servant leadership qualities in recruitment, program coordination and administration.

  7. An ability to work as part of a team concept.

  8. An ability to interact with a diverse group of people.

  9. An ability to maintain confidentiality in a sensitive and professional manner.

  10. An ability make a creative contribution to the total church program.


 


Music Minister Responsibilities:


Reporting Relationship    



  1. The Music Minister will be under the direction of an assigned Pastor.

  2. The Music Minister will meet regularly/weekly with the assigned Pastor, church staff and other key leaders in the Music Ministry.

  3. Vacation Days will be coordinated with the assigned Pastor.


 




     Responsibilities



  1. Plan, organize and lead the ministry of music working in concert with the pastor to develop and coordinate music for worship following Lutheran theology and the church calendar. Recommend and incorporate worship service music that supports sermon series themes, liturgical seasons and special events.

  2. Work with the pastoral staff and volunteers through teamwork and mutual support to ensure that appropriate congregational and special music are provided for all regular worship services, special services and other programs as needed.

  3. Lead the Sanctuary Choir, small groups, soloists and Trinity Handbells in worship services and cultivate the musical gifts of all participants.

  4. Encourage and lead the development of additional choral music and/or instrumental groups within the congregation. Encourage and recruit members of the congregation to offer their musical gifts in the service of Christ and the church in a variety of ways.

  5. Encourage and lead the Sanctuary Choir and instrumental groups to present occasional larger choral works for seasonal and special occasions.

  6. Encourage congregational singing as an essential part of worship and as resources permit, encourage and participate in the development of other musical activities as a means of Christian fellowship and congregational outreach.

  7. Administer the music ministry program effectively, manage the content of our website by suppling timely updates to the webmaster and arrange for a suitable substitute as needed.

  8. Attend staff and committee meetings to provide professional guidance and assist in planning to ensure a high quality music ministry program.

  9. Recruit volunteers to lead, assist or provide instrumental accompaniment for all services and musical group activities and schedule guest musicians.

  10. Plan and oversee the budget for the music ministry program. Evaluate, select and purchase or secure choral music for Sanctuary worship services representing a wide range of styles, including classical, traditional, gospel/spiritual, and contemporary.  Assist church staff in purchasing or securing music, supplies and other materials for the music ministry program as needed.

  11. Oversee the systematic care of all music ministry materials; church music library, robes, handbells, chimes, timpani, organ, piano, and other church owned musical instruments and develop a plan for ensuring that they remain fully functional and up to date.

  12. Continue to grow professionally as a church musician. Remain abreast of current developments in church music by maintaining contact with other churches and professional groups.  Be active in professional development through continuing education, reading current literature, and participating in professional organizations.

  13. Interface with light and sound technicians and other staff members to provide adequate lighting and quality sound during services as well as our online presence.

  14. Promote an understanding of music as an arena for spiritual growth in relationship to Jesus Christ. Show how music is connected to worship services' Biblical and spiritual message.  As a music minister, the musician has the responsibility to nurture his/her own faith in order to nurture the faith of others.

  15. Take leadership in providing emotional, social and spiritual support for those involved in the music ministry and provide opportunities for fellowship.


  16. Model a Christian attitude of welcome and concern, fostering supportive and caring relationships among choir members and other participants in the music ministry program.
