About Us
Welcome to Liberty Spring Christian Church!
Located in the Whaleyville Borough of the City of Suffolk in southeast Virginia, Liberty Spring Christian Church was founded in 1869 by a group of neighbors who wanted the children of the community to have a place to learn about the Bible. Over a hundred and fifty years later, Liberty Spring Christian Church continues to be a body of believers devoted to demonstrating the love of Christ by loving people. Having been saved by the abounding grace of God, we desire to share the life-giving message of the Gospel through personal testimony and by our participation in sacrificial giving and selfless acts of love and charity — within the church body, in our community, and around the world. Our vision is to cultivate a deep passion for the divine beauty and infinite worth of God; seeking His glory in every aspect of life for the ultimate joy of all people. Recognizing our shared identity as the family of God, we embrace a profound commitment and affection toward strengthening families as we strive to provide the genuine connection and Christ-like compassion that so many search for in our modern world.
We believe that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, and authoritative Word of God through which God has revealed His character, His will, and His plan for the redemption of fallen humanity. It is the final authority in regards to the truth, morality, and the proper conduct of mankind. It is, therefore, the sole and final source of all that we believe. We believe in only one God who exists eternally in three persons -- the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We believe in God the Father; the eternally existing Creator of all that is seen and unseen, and that we sinners can only be saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ, God's only Son, who took on human flesh to provide a way for us to be saved from the penalty of our sins. We believe in His virgin birth, His sinless life, His death as an atonement for sin through the shedding of His blood, His bodily resurrection, His ascension to heaven, and His promised return. We believe in the ministry of the Holy Spirit whose presence within believers from the moment of salvation enables them to live by faith and to grow in spiritual maturity. It is also the Holy Spirit’s ministry which draws the hearts of non-believers to faith in Jesus Christ. New believers come to Christ by grace and through faith, and they join the community of believers through baptism. The church observes Communion as a representation of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and as a ceremony that binds the community of believers together. Neither baptism nor communion, however, have the power to save. This brief statement of faith does not cover the full extent of our beliefs.
Situated in the southern reaches of Suffolk, Virginia, and bordering North Carolina along U.S. Route 13, Whaleyville is a primarily rural, close-knit neighborhood cherished for its storied historic district, expansive farmlands, and a peaceful way of life that reflects the enduring character of our local community. Serving as home to approximately 8,800 neighbors, Whaleyville fosters a serene environment rooted in mutual support and a traditional rural spirit. As an integral part of the community, Liberty Spring Christian Church has gone through periods of growth and decline over the decades. In the last five years, our membership has doubled with approximately 50 attendees on any given Sunday giving us a growing, diverse congregation. We delight in a strong, Biblical core of instruction with a mix of traditional and contemporary music. Monthly opportunities to fellowship with each other have created a culture of mutual love and support within our church family. Our greatest strength lies in our dedication to missions work within the community, across our region, and around the world. Our community engagement efforts are supported both financially and with volunteer hours by our members who eagerly share God’s love and kindness with our neighbors. We are excited to expand our children’s ministry and to deepen connections in our community. At times, our remote location and moderate finances can hinder our efforts to share God’s love, but He always provides a way when we are working through His name and within His will. We invite you to join us on this journey of faith and fellowship, as we continue to grow together, to serve our community, and to share the love of Christ with everyone we meet.
